The hands behind every piece

Namaste, I'm Ramya ๐Ÿ™

I'm a freelance artist based in Bengaluru, India โ€” and Kalanirmati is my heart project. What started as a deep love for traditional Kolam art turned into something I never expected: a way to bring a little piece of Indian heritage into homes across the country and around the world.

Every piece I create is handcrafted on MDF, painted with the same care and precision that Kolam has demanded of artists for centuries. I believe art doesn't have to be expensive to be meaningful โ€” it just has to be made with intention.

When I'm not painting, you'll find me sipping filter coffee, exploring Bengaluru's streets, or studying new Kolam patterns for inspiration. This passion keeps me grounded and reminds me why I started.

The story

How Kalanirmati
came to life

Kolam has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up watching the women in my family draw these intricate patterns at the doorstep every morning โ€” a daily ritual of beauty, devotion, and creativity.

One day, I thought: what if Kolam could live beyond the floor? What if these patterns โ€” so full of meaning and geometry โ€” could find a home on walls, in puja rooms, in the hands of people who may have never seen a Kolam drawn in real life?

"Art that feels like home โ€” that's what I set out to create."

Kalanirmati was born from that question. Every piece I make carries the tradition forward โ€” not behind glass in a museum, but in living rooms, gifted to loved ones, hanging in homes across India and beyond.

โœ๏ธ Replace with your real origin story โ€” when did you start? What was the first piece you made? What was the moment you decided to share it with the world?

Rooted in tradition

Every pattern is drawn from centuries of Kolam art passed down through generations of South Indian women.

Made with intention

No two pieces are identical. Every brushstroke is deliberate โ€” made for someone, not for the shelf.

For homes everywhere

From Bengaluru to beyond โ€” these pieces carry a piece of India to wherever you call home.
